Hope After the Storm: A Community Recovery Appeal
A random Monday changed everything.
Families left for work, dropped their children off at daycare, ran errands, and planned dinner—never imagining they would return to homes destroyed by one of the most devastating tornadoes our community has experienced in recent memory.
In just minutes, lives were forever changed.
Today, hundreds of households across Menasha, Appleton, Fox Crossing, and Neenah are navigating the long road to recovery. Current assessments indicate that hundreds of families have been displaced, with many homes sustaining major damage or becoming uninhabitable. While emergency responders have provided critical immediate relief, we know from experience that the greatest need often begins after those organizations leave.
When the Red Cross, Samaritan's Purse, and the National Guard complete their mission, families will still need help paying rent, replacing beds, putting food on the table, and rebuilding their lives.
That is where St. Vincent de Paul Neenah-Menasha remains.
Last year alone, our community responded in extraordinary ways:
- Our Emergency Bed Program provided 577 beds, valued at more than $40,000, giving children and adults a safe place to sleep.
- We provided $69,575 in direct emergency financial assistance to help families remain housed, pay utilities, and meet urgent needs.
- Through our thrift store ministry, we distributed $222,461 in vouchers for clothing, furniture, mattresses, and essential household items.
- Vinnie's Pantry distributed 875,126 pounds of fresh produce, dairy products, eggs, meat, and pantry staples during 15,494 household visits, serving thousands of local families experiencing food insecurity.
Following this unprecedented tornado, we expect demand for every one of these services to more than double.
Families rebuilding after disaster will need first month's rent and security deposits. Parents will need beds for their children. Seniors will need furniture and household essentials. Working families who never imagined needing help will turn to our food pantry as insurance benefits end, savings are exhausted, and recovery expenses continue to mount.
Simply put, this disaster exceeds what our current resources, donations, and annual operating budget were designed to support.
To meet the extraordinary needs of our community, St. Vincent de Paul Neenah-Menasha is launching a $1 Million Community Recovery Fund.
This fund will provide:
- Emergency rent and utility assistance.
- First month's rent and security deposits for displaced families.
- Beds, mattresses, furniture, and household essentials.
- Food for thousands of households facing increased food insecurity.
- Clothing and basic necessities for families rebuilding their homes and lives.
Every dollar raised will stay right here in our community, helping our neighbors recover with dignity and hope.
Recovery will not be measured in weeks. It will take months—and for many families, years.
